Best Places to Shop in Des Moines

If you happen to find yourself anywhere near Iowa’s State Capital without a thing to wear, no worries, Des Moines has you covered. The State’s Capital and largest metropolitan area is home to a variety of great places to shop, including the largest retail center in Iowa at 2 million square feet – The Jordan Creek Town Center located along Jordan Creek Parkway in West Des Moines. The mall is home to a large selection of popular brand name stores such as Dillard’s, Banana Republic and Aeropostale, just to name a few. West Des Moines is also home to the Valley West Mall, which offers a smaller collection of stores including GAP, Von Maur, and Younkers. If you prefer open-air mall shopping, head over to the West Glen Town Center, also in West Des Moines. The West Glen Town Center features a nice but small collection of independent boutiques and stores and restaurants worthy of a visit. Rounding out the list of shopping areas in West Des Moines is Valley Junction, a historic neighborhood with numerous antique stores, specialty boutiques, galleries and restaurants.

Keeping with the neighborhood shopping theme, we recommend checking out the pedestrian-friendly Historic East Village, located downtown Des Moines near the Iowa State Capitol Building. Here, you’ll find several independent shops of all varieties, along with some great restaurants. Definitely the place to shop in downtown Des Moines! Topping off the shopping tour of Des Moines is the Merle Hay Mall, located northwest of downtown. The Merle Hay Mall is home to more than 90 stores, including Target, Old Navy, and ULTA northwest of downtown.
