Best Places to Shop in Austin
As the 4th largest city in Texas with a metro area of around 1.7 million residents, it’s no secret that Austin could definitely use a few more shopping destinations. Austin serves as the State’s Capital, and is also known as The Live Music Capital of the World. The live music and entertainment scene is hot, and there are more music venues per capita than that of any other U.S. city. So needless to say, shopping in Austin isn’t the number one draw. But fortunately for Austin residents and visitors alike, Austin does have a few fantastic shopping destinations that will have you singing all the way home.
In the downtown area, set amongst the many live music venues are South Congress or “SoCo” and the Second Street District. These areas are where you’ll find most of the downtown Austin shopping opportunities which include antique stores, independent eclectic shops and boutiques, and some fantastic restaurants. Both areas are also a good place to hang out and people watch.
If you prefer shopping among national brands, the two must-visit destinations in Austin are Barton Creek Square located west of Downtown Austin, and The Domain Austin, located in Austin’s vibrant northwest corridor area. Barton Creek Square is one of the largest and most popular malls in the Austin area, and features such popular retailers as Nordstrom, Macy’s, Dillard’s, Bakers, A|X Armani Exchange, Abercrombie & Fitch, bebe, Coach, Hollister, Forever 21, Sephora, many others. The Domain Austin is actually a 304-acre lifestyle community featuring upscale shopping, dining and living. The Domain’s line up of shopping favorites include Neiman Marcus, Dillard’s, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Barney’s CO-OP, Tiffany & Co, BCBGMAXAZRIA, Z Gallerie, and many others.
If you happen to find yourself in the north Austin area, you do have a couple of great shopping options available. The Arboretum at Great Hills offers a nice selection of 40 stores and restaurants in an open air environment. Some of the popular brands you’ll find here include Everything But Water, Janie and Jack, Nine West and Pottery Barn. And in the same general area, you’ll find Arboretum Market. This mall is home to just a handful of stores, but what stores they are! Saks Fifth Avenue, Williams-Sonoma, Ann Taylor and Sephora lead the small line-up of stores. Head west of Austin to the town of Bee Cave, TX and you’ll run into a popular area mall called Hill Country Galleria. Hill Country features a selection of stores like Ann Taylor, Coldwater Creek, New York & Company and White House Black Market.
Rounding out the available shopping options in the Austin area are 3 traditional family style malls. They include The Highland Mall, in the northeast area of Austin; The Killeen Mall in Killeen, TX north of Austin; and the Lakeline Mall in Cedar Park TX north of Austin. And for deal hunters, the Austin area is home to two popular outlet malls. The Round Rock Premium Outlets north of Austin, and the Tanger Outlets in San Marcos southwest of Austin and halfway to San Antonio.
